Joseph was killed in action on the 29th September, 1918. According to his obituary, he had excellent Prospects, being naturally clever, and the advantage of collegial education.

Joseph had been in the employment of Mr C Harker before enlisting.
He served in the same battalion as Lt. Jim Stembridge, they met in the trenches and conversed together a few days before they were both killed.
