In August 1915 his death was announced in the Parish Messenger. “He was the third son of Mr William Walker (all four of whose sons are serving in the army at the present time). 

At the outbreak of the war he enlisted in the 10^th Durham Light Infantry & went with his battalion on Foreign Service a few weeks ago. His Company Commander writes that ‘his loss is deeply mourned by the officers, NCOs & men of his Company – he was a good & faithful soldier & servant to his King and Country.’ While the officer, to whom he acted as orderly writes expressing the grief of his loss.”

By 1911 he was 15 working as a draper’s assistant & living at 13 Thorngate, Barnard Castle. His landlady was Emma Baker. There is also a George Walker recorded as working in Raby Raff Yard in 1911 but there is no proof that they are the same man. He joined the 10^th Durham Light Infantry in September 1914 & served in France. George was killed in action near Ypres on 28^th June, 1915 aged 20 & is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.
