Harry was the son of George & Elizabeth Thompson of Almshouses, Staindrop. In 1901 Harry and his family lived next door to Thomas & Eleanor Tarn whose son Edward also died in the war. In 1911 Harry was 15 and a colliery boy underground. He lived with his parents and siblings in the Almhouses. His father was a retired cartman. Harry had a sister Lizzie who was Mavis Wearmouth’s mother. Mavis has loaned Harry’s medals and memorabilia to the exhibition.

He joined the 15th Battalion Durham Light Infantry in 1915 and served in France. Harry was reported missing on 2nd October, 1917 aged 23 and is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
