Dent was the son of George (from West Auckland) and Margaret Ann (from Keverstone). George was a Woodman and Gardener. Dent had an older sister called Elizabeth and younger sister called May.  The children were born in Stainton. 

According the family, Dent worked as a footman. Since May worked at Streatlam Castle, it is possible that Dent also worked there.
