Thomas was the son of Ann Skerrow of Staindrop. His father, John, died soon after Thomas was born. In 1901 Thomas lived with his mother & sister Annie in Office Row, Staindrop. Thomas worked as a quarryman labourer.

In September 1917 Parish magazine, his death was announced “He was a native of Staindrop & known to all.”

Notes:

A local source notes that Thomas worked at Raby Gardens & played cricket for Raby Cricket Club. It is thought that he trained as a gardener at the Duke of Portland’s Wellbeck Gardens. He served in the 20th Durham Light Infantry. Thomas was killed in France on 1st August, 1917 aged 37 & is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres.
