Fred was brought up by Mrs Soulsby of Staindrop. In 1901 Fred Scott lived in Bridge Terrace, Darlington, with his parents Thomas & Ruth and his siblings. His father was a railway porter.  By 1911 he was 17, working as a coal miner putter. He was boarding at his grandmother Hannah Soulsby’s house with his sister Ruth, aged 11. Hannah Soulsby had a grocery business at Keswick House on Main Street.

Notes:

He joined the 2nd Yorkshire Regiment in August 1914 and served in France where he was wounded. Fred was killed on the Somme on 26th July,1917 aged 23 & is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres.
