Thomas was educated at the Church School , where he gained a scholarship to the North Eastern County School. He went on to Armstrong College , Newcastle , where he obtained ha B.Sc. degree.

At the outbreak of war he was Science Master at the Grammar School Earl's Colne, Essex. He joined the University and Public School Battalion in September 1914 as private. In December 1914, Thomas was gazetted second  lieutenant in the 11t h King' s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry , stationed at Cannock Chare and was given the rank of Captain in early 1916.
