After leaving the N.E. County School, Anthony attended a teacher training course at Durham College and took up a position at Southwick central School, Sunderland.
He enlisted in 1915, first in the Royal Army Medical Corps and was then transferred to the Royal Fusiliers. He was promoted to Sergeant and reassigned to the Royal West Kent Regiment.
