Teesdale Mercury-29/05/1918: Local and other notes: Killed by shellfire
Prior to the war William had been apprenticed to a draper. Initially, he was rejected on medical grounds in two or three successive attempts to enlist in the army.
During his time on the front William had taken part in the great battle of Messines Ridge and 'fought like a courageous soldier' throughout the whole campaign. In 1917 he was admitted to St. Edward's Hospital in London suffering from a gunshot wound to the back.
William was described as a 'gallant young soldier' who was highly respected in Barnard Castle.
