Killed in action
Sydney 'was a fine fellow and a brave soldier, and he died while leading his men into battle'.
Sydney is mentioned in a 1915 a letter from Corporal Phillip Watson, who states that twenty men in his unit had been wounded on their first night in the trenches. Sydney had sustained particularly bad injuries.
In May 1917 the Mercury reported that Sydney had been wounded; he later recovered in hospital.
