In 1910 Norman went to Raby Estates as a domestic groom. He joined the Westmorland & Cumberland Yeomanry from Penrith in September, 1914 & afterwards transferred to the 7th Battalion Border Regiment. Norman served in France & Flanders & was awarded the Military Medal on 27th July, 1915 for acts of gallantry & devotion to duty under fire. Conferment of the medal was announced in the London Gazette on 16th July, 1918.  His medal was received by his sister Frances Elliott.
