George was the son of John & Phyllis Dent of Butterknowle Parish. His father had been a coal miner & a farmer but he had died before 1911. His mother was still farming in the area in 1911. At that time George was a butcher apprentice & he lived with his mother & older siblings.

He joined the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards from Langleydale & was killed in France on 27th September,1918 aged 25. He is buried at Sanders Keep Military Cemetery, Graincourt-Les-Havrincourt. In 1919 the King commanded the change from Private to Guardsman in recognition of the Regiment’s effort during the War.
