Born c. 1895, Oliver was the son of John Cook (of Glaisdale, Yorks) and Isabella (of Hartoft, Yorks). In 1901, Oliver was living with his parents in Great Ayton, together with an older brother, Frederick (born in Holme, Spalding Moor) and a younger sister, Pretoria May, like Oliver, born in York. In 1911, the family were in Boldron. By then, Oliver had another sister called Harriet Isabella, but he was no longer living at home.
