Family Details:

John Hepple was Born in Tow Law in 1882. The 1911 Census shows that, by then, he was a greengrocer in Woodland.  He  was married with three daughters. His wife was Isabella, eldest daughter of Mrs Waller of Woodland and the late John Waller, a consulting engineer to Crake Scar Collieries.  In 1915, a son, John Hepple was born to the Hepples. After John's death Isabella carried on the grocery business in Woodland until her death in 1935 aged 57 and her obituary in the Teesdale Mercury  26 June 1935 praised her standing in the Woodland Community, saying that 'she was a cornerstone of the Mission Church of St Mary's in Woodland'.

On 24 January 1917, the Teesdale Mercury reported John's visit to his home in Woodland prior to his departure for France.  Teesdale Mercury: Local and other notes (column 2) 

 

The Soldier's Effects Report records a payment of £15.15s and a War Gratuity of £11 paid to his widow. John's will shows that £325 was left to his wife.
