'Private Christopher Atkinson, son of Mr and Mrs W Atkinson, Lendings, formerly a compositor in The Teesdale Mercury office left Barnard Castle on Monday night, where he has been on a few days leave of absence preparatory to leaving on foreign service.  He is attached to the (Second) 6^th Battalion of Durham Light Infantry.'

Private Christopher Atkinson, of the Lendings, has joined the overseas’ forces of His Majesty, and in a postcard to a friend in Barnard Castle, just received, says that they are going into the firing line. Private T. Blackett, of this town, is with him, and both are in the 6^th Battalion Durham Light Infantry.
